Dr. Lowell pointed out a blog written by Stephen Downes: Half an Hour: The Village on Stilts and after reading his take on his visit to Malaysia, a comment was made regarding a statement made by Thomas Friedman indicating that the world was flat (in technological terms) but I wanted to stop and assess that comment for just a moment. Yes, the world is becoming flat because of technology but I feel that we have a long way to go to get there.
We often hear that technoogy has rendered the world flat, and, to some degree, I can agree with that. Certainly the more wealthy countries have the resources and infrastructure in place to connect with each other on a “flattened plane”….however, this does not describe the majority of the world. Many countries lag far behind when compare to the level of technology available to most anyone in the US. However, technology certainly cannot be the main issue for many of these place which must concentrate their resources of basic survival needs. Perhaps one day, though, we will be one world…..flat as a board!
