Does Technology Access Help or Hinder Equity?
At first glance, one would think that technology could only be an asset when trying to level the playing field in education. But a little more thought leads me to think that statement is not necessarily true.
In the first place, technology can help make teaching more equitable when students know how to use the technology in a way that enhances learning. Simply sitting in front of a computer following on screen instruction probably does little to level the playing field when it comes to equity in education. Students must not only understand the use of technology, they must be free to use it in a way that allows it to enhance the educational experience. Students must be free to exploit technology to an extent that it increases the opportunity for learning. If students do not understand the use of technology, or are forced to do the same things every other student does regardless of their abilities, then they quickly become bored and equity is once again quelled in the name of education. Technology must not be the limiting factor when it come to the learning environment…..it must be a launching place that allows students to explore using all their gifts.

Technology is a great learning tool. You’re right, though, just sitting in front of a computer does not insure that education is taking place. The issue is learning. When students are learners and really want to learn, they will seek out opportunities to do so. Our goal should be to motivate them to learn. Technology can do that in many cases. Having access is essential.
Technology must be implemented in such a way that it is relevant and meaningful to what is going on in the classroom. If it is not, then it is just being forced into use and will not be quite as effective. We have to design goals that meet both what we want academically as well technologically.
